Comparing Government Job and Private Job

Sometime or the other, every one in this country get this doubt whether private job is better or government job is better. Readers await if someone can "Compare Government Job and Private Job". If something is better, in what way. This question is found unanswered clearly till date over the internet and i made an attempt here to bring clarity on this. I know many people are in dilemma to chose the right sector. Having worked in Software companies for considerable years and in Government Sector (CBI), i feel i am eligible to write an article on this by expressing my own experience. I tried covering various aspects of those two jobs and i think it must give you clarity on what suits you better for your personality and make a career choice accordingly. Let us know the answer for the question "Which job is better? Government job or Private Job?". Hope this article give you much needed answer, at least now.

I can understand that some comparisons seems funny but that is the realty. The below comparison table looks better in desktop view mode.

Comparison
Table

Government Sector
(Ex: CBI)

Private Sector
(Ex: Software)
Salary
Initially High
Subsequently looks lower

Initially Low
Subsequently High (May be three/four times or even more)

I don't deny the fact that there are some private jobs which offer less salary forever than Govt jobs. The above comparison is w.r.t Software jobs
Salary Hikes Standard. Every year 3% hike irrespective of whatsoever. DA keeps changing for every six months, according to the inflation in the market. Let earthquakes come or volcanoes erupt. You can talk about your basic salary after 10 years, even right now. Market Driven. No one can predict whether you will have hike or even the job.
Promotions
Depends only on your experience and reservation.
Doesn't depend on your talent

Depends only on your talent.
Nothing to do with your experience and cast
Job Security 100% secure. Can't say if you are corrupted/dishonest
Only god knows whether the company itself will be there in the future or not.

Ex: Satyam Computers, Broadband Service Companies with the advent of Jio.
Getting the job Very very tough. You need to have talent. Not so tough. Even if you are average talented person, you may get a job and survive there.
Stress Minimal or No. It is up to you if you want to take it up or not. What is the worry when your job is secure? Very High. Their environment is profit and competition driven. It is a daily race.
Allowances Just decent enough. Good.
Reputation Very good. Do I need to talk about the respect a CBI staff gets wherever he goes? There are lakhs of such software personnel in this country. So, obviously the respect is diluted.
Tours Comparatively High. Very very limited. May be for some technical training.
Flight Travel Yes (from Level 7 of CPC pay matrix and above) Yes
Hotel Accommodation Not so great. Better allowance limit from the rank of DSP (per day around Rs 2300/-) and above Very good. They provide star hotel accommodation even for freshers
Office Premises Not so great. Very good.
Onsite Travel
Very Limited or No (I am not talking about MEA here)
You get diplomatic passport whenever you travel on official duty. You travel onsite for training or when you are in Interpol
Yes. You get chance to visit even more than 10 countries for projects execution
Office
Washrooms
Not regularly maintained Hourly maintained. So, obviously very good.
Bossism More. However, the job is secured. I said it is "more" as boss's job is also secured and that is how they were also grown up in the organization. More
Scolding Literal Scolding Only professional scolding
Communication in the office Only through files and letters. Only through Mails
Processes Involved Cumbersome and slow Liberal and fast.
Why processes are slow?
Many departments are involved. Even your Id card creation takes a few months. Law doesn't change as frequent as we get an android app update
Processes are faster. They quickly adopt to the changes and they engage latest software in automating many manual things.
Office Room Facilities Not so good. Some times not even a better table, chair or AC. A few offices are like any municipal office that you generally see in movies with lot of files, almirahs etc.. Very good. Central AC, Nice Chair, Latest Laptop/Desktop, High Speed Internet, VOIP etc.
Cafeteria
No. If yes, very limited food varieties
Yes. In fact, many food options are available
Cafeteria Cleanliness No Yes
Medical Benefits Unlimited medical expense. But list of hospitals are restricted Upper Limit is there. We can choose hospital of our choice
Social Relations
Very good. They build automatically. In fact, quality relations
Not so great
Work Satisfaction There is an element of satisfaction that you are working for the betterment of this country. Depends on the individual
Transfers Across India. Just within the company, wherever it is
Expenses Claim Slow as they do it manual, may be a month. Faster and digitized
Work Execution You have to learn. No open information/data/solutions available over the internet. You can get answers for most of your work related problems just by googling.
Holidays Good. No working on Holidays. Employees treat that as a sin to work on holidays No so good in number. You may have to work even on Holidays.
Office Timings From 09:30 to 18:00 only. You hardly find people working in the office after 18:15 No one knows when you may have to go to the office. Dynamic timings
Phone bill claim Yes Depends on the company and the project you work for
Helping the Relatives You can guide your friends and relatives for their regular social needs like some police case, ration card, bribe demand, electricity/water problem etc., of course in a legal way. Forget about others. You may not find time even for yourself.  At max, you can get the work done by paying some bribe. If you are courageous, that is an exception scenario.
Respect in the office Every subordinate staff greet you everyday with proper body language. Nothing of that sort. People even don’t know what is that
Love affairs in office Mostly no, but possible. Very common as both genders work together.
Emergency Travel You can get confirmed ticket in any train any time. Not possible. Who the heck are you!!
Work Recognition Good. In some cases, you get even All India recognition. Who the hell are you, unless you do some revolutionary invention.
Working life partner They consider if your life partner is also working in some govt service. They try to accommodate you at the same place No such consideration. After all, they are doing business and they can't factor in all those.
Invited as guest Yes. Ex: Chief Guest of a school/college on Independence Day No, unless you donate a lump sum.
Ignoring the boss Yes, as your job is secured. At max, he can scream, ignore and recommend to his boss for your transfer. You can't even think ignoring him. Your job is mainly in his hands (= Appraisal).
Switching your Organization No. You may have to give the exam again, if your age allows You can easily resign and jump to other company with better pay.
Marriage Proposals Depends. Some people want only software life partners and some people want only Govt job holders. No clear answer for this as taste is different for different people. It is like few people have faith on private banks and a few have faith on govt banks
Child Education Govt Pays every year for your kids study Depends on the company and your role in it.
Post retirement Pension in some or other form. Health Benefits continue for your entire family No such things after you resign.
Free Coffee/Tea/Milk Nothing free Yes. In almost all the major companies, vending machines are kept in the open areas for free availability and you can have it any number of times
Bank Loans With little lesser interest rate, like 0.25 is less, as your job is secure, loan repayment is guaranteed and hence less riskier for the bank Like any other
Departmental Exams Exams are there for your next level of promotion. Again, it varies from dept to dept. Mostly no such. Exceptional cases might be there and i am not aware
Need to keep learning Up to you as your job is secure. Better you are updated, better the knowledge It is must as technologies change very fast, they way a new phone model comes to the market.
Salary Confidentiality Everyone knows your salary, as you are a public servant Only you, your project manager and HR knows it. Your salary, annual hike is an intriguing item for your colleagues and they always enquire about this one way or the other.
Public Visibility Everyone is watching you. Media (Paper and TV), Various Government Commissions like NHRC, NCW, CVC, ..., Colleagues, Friends and ofcourse your boss. Every person is a spy camera for your activities. Only your manager and hardly your colleagues observe you. Outsiders just ignore you
Court Visit You will have to visit courts once in a while to give evidence about any public document over which you have dominion. If you worked as CBI officer, you will have to go to the court even after your retirement as you are the IO of the case that is being trailed in the court. No such thing.
Risks Involved Risk of character assasination. Some section of the public will be unhappy with your public duty. So, they will sling mud on you. Risk of loosing your job. Financial Insecurity. Your monthly house maintenance, bank loans like Car EMI, House loan EMIs are dependent on your job.

  14. Sir, please write a post about the recent crisis in CBI. Is it still worth pursuing a government job (like SI in CBI) with an aim to serve the nation, knowing that the ruling government, whichever it is, engages in complete destruction of the independent and impartial nature of institutions like CBI and uses excessively for their political gains?

    1. As it is said in previous posts if anyone tries to obstruct the investigation he gets punished as per law. This statement has been proved to be true all the time. Examples of those T.N.Seshan and Kiran Bedi. No one interferes with you if you uphold the law.

    1. bhai if your ultimate goal is to be a CBI officer, dont for a fancy grad college. instead focus on the studies to clear the exam and join a college where you dont have to put in extra efforts as such.
there are enteries at two levels - 1. through UPSC as IPS 2. through SSC at the position of SI . decide which one you want to go for
UPSC takes much more dedication. ssc a bit less. but if you already ahve made up your mind and start your prepartion at this early stage, you can easily clear either of the two.
