Salary of Sub Inspector in CBI with Rs 44,900 /- Basic
Everyone's salary expectation is as much shown above. But no government job might give you that much salary. Let us understand CBI Sub Inspector salary and perks as on Jan-2023
Mentioned here the CBI Sub Inspector Salary after 7th pay commission with 4600 grade pay. The number "4600" is only a number just to identify your level (4600 = Level 7) in the pay matrix. It has no other significance and it is NOT a component of your income/salary. This is how the salary slip of CBI officer majorly looks. To clarify more, it is the CBI Sub Inspector Salary structure of a fresher. It is the typical 4600 grade pay salary of any service, other than SIA component.
For CBI Inspector, the salary depends on his present level index in level 8 of pay matrix in his parent organization. If he is from other departments like RPF, CRPF, CISF, BSF etc., he would be getting extra 20% of his basic, in the form of SIA i.e. if his present basic is 65,000 he would get +13,000 every month in his salary. There will be no other changes. If a Sub-Inspector from state police who has completed at least five years of service joins CBI on deputation, he would be given an inspector cadre. He is also given an option to choose whether he wants to continue with his parent department's salary structure or with central government salary structure. During his tenure in CBI, if his parent state declares regular pay revision, he can again decide his choice as per his wish.
If a bank officer joins CBI on deputation as Inspector of Police, the salary he gets after joining CBI would be equal to the salary that he would get if an increment was given to him by his bank as per his bank pay scales + 20% of his new basic. In formula form, CBI Salary of a bank officer = Bank Salary with new basic as if he was given one increment by his bank + 20% of his new basic in the name of investigation allowance. The table mentioned below is not applicable to anyone except for newly recruited Sub-Inspector of Police.

One can't imagine this salary being a fresher in regular software companies like TCS, Wipro, CTS etc. You have to work at least for 6-7 yrs to reach this salary which is again subject to global market factors and various performance indicators. If salary is your only motive and if you can get a secured, reputed and powerful (= more responsible) job of higher salary with guaranteed increments, you may opt for that job. About 13th month pay, explained down below.
+Basic
+Basic
- For new joiner, it is 44900 (Level 7, entry scale)
- From the pay-matrix, Observe that the basic increases every year by 3%.
- 7CPC Pay matrix is placed below for immediate reference.
- Like in all central services, every promotion puts you in the next level of grade pay in the pay matrix. Imagine what would be your salary down the lane, with extra 20% of your basic as special investigation allowance (SIA).
- From the pay matrix you can see below, their basic salaries are taken from the levels as mentioned here. For Inspector it is 4800 (Level 8), For DSP it is 5400 (Level 10), for ASP it is 6600 (Level 11) and for SP it is 7600 (Level 12) and goes on. Level 9 is not applicable unless you are considered for MACP while you are an Inspector. Ignore asking me what is MACP, for the time being. One may google to know more about it.
Suppose you are in level 7 as SI with current basic salary of 50500. If you are promoted as Inspector, you have to be moved to Level 8 but with what basic? Whenever you are promoted, an increment is given in the same level (the level one day before the day of your promotion) and so, it will be 52000 in Level 7. But, you have to be placed in Level 8. So, a figure that is greater than or equal to 52000 is identified and that figure will be your new basic after your promotion. Such figure greater than or equal to 52000 in level 8 is again 52000. Same method is used upon promotion from any rank to any rank. This will be your new basic after the promotion. In this way, you get salary hike when promoted from SI to Inspector. No promotion can effect your regular annual increment and that is permanent. Suppose you are promoted on 31st of December and your annual increment is in the month of January, you will be given two increments in total, one for promotion and one for annual increment. In this scenario, you observe a change of atleast 6% hike in the basic.
+DA
- Labour bureau measures and declares CPI(IW) index on monthly basis.
- Basing on the index, department of expenditure calculates, revises and publishes the DA% once in every six months. It is always an integer. Mostly it increases 3% to 4%, once in every six months. It may even decrease also (happens very very rare). Accordingly, DA component is revised and shown in the salary slip.
- It is 46% as on 19-10-2023. When we say DA is X%, it means X% of the basic component. This figure is revised every year in the months of Mar-Apr and Aug-Sep.
+Transport Allowance (TPTA)
- Details about various allowances after 7 CPC are mentioned above. They are applicable for any central government job, not just for CBI.
- Travel Allowance is given even during the training, though you are actually not traveling then.
- As you can see from TPTA section from the tables above, It is 3600 for X cities and 1800 for Non-X Cities for CBI SI i.e. Level 7.
- Cities classification here. Other than TPTA and HRA components, no other components are dependent on cities classification.
- DA on TA is also given along with the above.
- After training is over and posting is given, if you are on camp for entire calendar month and hence away from the office, then this component is not given. This can happen if you are working in Special crime, placed in Delhi and camping some where in South India, say Kerela. However, if you are present in the HQ at least for a day, then the entire component is given. So, plan accordingly after you join the service.
- Various details about allowances after 7 CPC are mentioned below
+SIA
- 20% (not 25%) of your Basic. Even NIA, ED staff gets this component. Not all other departments. No DA on SIA component.
- Just a demand to make it 24% from 20%. Such demands will always be there.
–NPS
- 10% of total amount on Basic and DA
- But, government contributes 14% of your (Basic+DA) to your NPS. Until Mar-19, it used to be just 10%. As it is a government contribution in your favor, it is up to you to add to your gross salary and get satisfied accordingly.
- If you keep 100% of this accumulated NPS fund even after your retirement, your pension amount is claimed to be more than 50% of your last drawn salary.
–CGHS
- It is basically a medical insurance for the entire family.
- All your family members and dependents are covered under this scheme.
- If you are a woman, either your parents or in-laws can be shown as your dependents. Not both.
- Free medical checkup and medicines, without any limit.
- Only for outpatient.
- For inpatient, you can visit only an empaneled private hospital on the recommendation of CGHS doctor. The process involved is little cumbersome and tiring.
–CGEGIS
- Central Government Employees General Insurance Scheme
- It is a life insurance. Accidental death is covered under this.
- Calculated based on your savings, House rent being paid and other sources of income you declared to the department. So, it varies from person to person, year to year. No fixed figure. For fresh SI, it will be around 45,000 per year. Big subject that can't be discussed here.
- 2% of Income Tax amount
- Different from Education Cess mentioned above.
- 2% of Income Tax amount.
- Earlier it used to be 1% only. This is how govt slowly puts a hole in your pocket.
+HRA
You can find the list of all X, Y and Z cities here.
X cities = Population more than 50 lakhs.
Y cities = Population between 5 lakhs and 50 lakhs.
Z cities = Population less than 5 lakhs.
Higher the population in a city, higher the house rents. Hence such classification. X city is referred in the salary slip above.
If you are a fresher to the central government, you do not get HRA during your stay in the academy. If you were already working in central govt in some department of any cadre and joined CBI after technical resignation, you do get HRA along with other salary components, even if you are staying in the Trainees hostel. It is actually an advantage for them and others feel bad for missing that.
So, after taxes deduction, net salary (= in hand salary) of CBI sub inspector is around 61,820 in training (+ HRA subject to condition mentioned in the previous paragraph). This figure can't be an exact figure as DA keeps changing for every six months and accordingly other dependent components. So, the gross/net salary figure i mentioned here might be lesser for the day you are reading this article.
After your training and branch posting, if you don’t opt for Govt Quarters, you are paid full HRA, taking your GROSS salary to 86,000+ per month as shown in the first table above. Either use quarters by losing full HRA or take a rented house outside and claim your full HRA. When you are transferred/posted, getting quarters is not guaranteed. Only if flats are available, they allot a Tier 3 type flat (= 2 Bed room flat) for SI/Inspectors. For DSPs it is 3 bed room flat and for SPs and above, it is independent villa. This can't be called as partiality. Their basic salary and hence HRA is high and hence such facility. CPWD dept paint the apartment every time afresh and hand over the flat to the fresh occupant. If there is no vacancy in the CBI quarters, you can also try in general pool quarters that are somewhere else in the city. These general pool quarters are open to any government employee irrespective of his department.
As you are fully paid every month even during training, other than the HRA component, your salary/pay doesn't change even if your training is completed and posted to a branch.
Note 1.1: If you are posted in North-East states, you are entitled for double HRA but note that there are no X, Y cities in North-East which means he gets 2 * 8% = 16% of Basic as HRA. However, you get an extra amount of around 4500 (~ 10% of basic) as tribal allowance. So, in all, you get decent enough HRA which is equal or more than that of X city.

Note 1.2: If you are transferred to North-Eastern city from any non-northeastern city (say Mumbai, Hyderabad...), you have the privilege to have quarters at both the places i.e. both at the "from" place and "to" place. So, your family can stay there in the "from" city and you can take one more quarter in the north-eastern region without any extra salary deductions. Such facility is not there if you transfer from one city to another city in the main land of India. This is for any central govt job.
Q) I heard about 13th month pay in CBI? When is this 13th month pay generally paid?
When you hear the word "month pay", everyone tend to think that one month full salary is paid. That is not your fault as someone coined it so with a wrong word. You are given only one extra BASIC and DA (not full salary), generally in February or March of every year i.e. after counting your extra days of previous year. Nothing to do with financial year here. It is not paid every month. This extra pay is given because you may need to come to office on holidays as per the need and department calculates it as 2.5 extra working days per month (Suppose you come for four holidays in a month. Extra 1.5 (=4.0-2.5) days goes waste as monthly limit is just 2.5 days). So, 12 such months multiplied by 2.5 = 30 days = One month extra pay. If you don't want this extra salary, you need not come and sign in the register. At the end of year, account section calculates those extra days basing on your attendance register (not more than 2.5 days per month) and pay 13th month pay, proportionate to those extra days. Even your training period is considered for your 13th month pay.
On average, your 13th month pay will be more or less the total income tax amount you pay annually to the government. This 13th month pay and Income Tax amount comparison is only for an estimation and need not be exact. Also, your 13th month pay is taxable as it is part of your income.
** 13th month pay is not applicable for the ranks of DSP and above.
Perks:

Perks:
- Immediate Major perk is respect. All India respect. At least, people pay attention to what you say and respond politely. No other CGL post can get you as much as this post. You get to meet highly qualified, high salaried and real time great actors (people acting absolute innocence, fake smile, obedience etc) better than reel actors like Amitabh/NTR/MGR...
- Another visible perk is 13th month pay, not for DSPs and above ranks.
- 20% of basic component, every month in your salary.
- Because of tours, some save (after deducting average expenditure) to the extent of Rs 10,000 every month or even more from daily allowances. In fact, this option is very good for male bachelors as they are shackles free and can roam around any where, easily.
- Rewards for every major work, like participating in traps, arresting somebody in a case, execution of NBWs, bringing information about a corrupted officer which gets converted into an FIR etc.. These rewards history support your nomination for Indian Police Medal (IPM), President Police Medal (PPM). Working/Retired officer holding PPM will get concessions in most of the government service like train tickets, flights for ever for your personal works.
- Quality contacts in any given field to have precise and genuine information/advice. The information comes on highway.
- You can easily arrange industrial internships for any one of your child/relative/friend in any government PSU, in any sector. They generally oblige.
- SIM connection for which the organization pays up to 500 per month.
- Two wheeler and four wheeler are available in the office. Two wheeler can be used by you if you need for office work. Of course, office petrol. So, transportation is not a problem. If there is vehicle shortage, preference is given as per the rank.
- Guest house facility wherever you go across India. In fact we can use guest houses of Banks, Railways, All PSUs like NTPC, HPCL, BHEL..... and other central government guest houses like Central Excise, Income Tax...
- Confirmed train tickets any time (of course, not after the chart is prepared), any where, any train.
- No toll (1% exception cases might be there as few ignorant and illiterate people are employed for such toll-men jobs and they argue sometimes)
- Access to State and Central Police Canteens like CRPF, CISF etc. Defense canteens are not given access.
- Commander of all CGL job holders. The privileges that others get can also be gotten by you. I am not talking about nature of duties here.
- Best job to know anything about anything from genuine sources. You get access to even very high high officials. So, you get precise and exact information. I don't have to tell you the importance of information in this world. In fact a few departments in India exists just to collect Information and they don't do anything else. Every public servant in India becomes your another obedient google search engine as they give you information which may not be available anywhere else.
- You become a knowledge filled pot at the time of your retirement and i don't have to tell you the importance of Knowledge.
- Personal works that are linked with any government departments are done on priority and at the earliest.
- I am not able to put all the perks here when they are umpteen. Few perks you can't even imagine. Things happen at the background for your convenience, even without your knowledge.
